In machinery, pins are mainly used for assembly positioning. They can also serve for connection and overload shear connections in release-type safety devices. Types of pins include cylindrical pins, taper pins, clevis pins, cotter pins, safety pins and more.
How are pins classified?
The basic types are cylindrical pins and taper pins. Cylindrical pins are fixed in pin holes by slight interference fit. Repeated assembly and disassembly will reduce positioning accuracy. Taper pins have a 1:50 taper ratio with self-locking property. They are secured in pin holes by cone surface compression. They feature high positioning accuracy, easy installation and can be assembled & disassembled multiple times.
What should be noted for pin selection?
Select pin types according to working requirements. For connecting pins, the diameter can be determined empirically based on structural features, with strength verification when necessary. The diameter of positioning pins is determined by structure. The pin length inside each connected component is around 1~2 times its diameter. Common pin materials are 35# steel and 45# steel. Safety pins adopt 35#, 45#, 50#, T8A, T10A. Their hardness reaches 30~36HRC after heat treatment. Bushing materials include 45#, 35SiMn, 40Cr, with hardness of 40~50HRC after heat treatment.
